HUGE nature photography project

So Niamh really enjoyed the photography, and we decided to focus a little more on it (plus our awesome friend Peter is allowing us to borrow his camera for a little longer) but for this project we decided to focus on the natural world.  Niamh loves animals (squirrels have proved to be delightful to capture even though Niamh is horrified at how many squirrel butts she has pictures of). She's mainly annoyed though.

Niamh is a bit of a perfectionist, this can lead to meltdowns over mistakes but photography offers a clear reward to patience and trying again - super important for any kid - any skill they can focus on, practice will transfer to other subjects and provide a reference point to refer back to. Niamh often wants to give up when she gets frustrated, and gently encouraging her does pull her focus back in.

I'm so proud of the work she's put in to this, her colours/composition/depth of field is spot on in every photograph but we've had an ace time doing this.

Niamh's chased a heron up and down the river Nidd, sat patiently feeding squirrels, and we've had the best time exploring and hunting (no animals were harmed obviously).

I'm really proud of her perseverance and focus. We've had to do this over two weeks because Niamh can only focus for short bursts but it's meant being outside daily, breathing fresh air and engaging for both of us.

The absolute best thing about home education is noticing your child's aptitude for something and giving them the space and time to fully explore it. These will be annotated with animal facts for biology.

All work has been chosen by Niamh.

Maths - Roman Numerals and Latin

When confronted with Roman numerals in her maths book, Niamh was dismissive of the need to know and understand Roman numerals and Latin.  Latin for many is a worthwhile language - useful for both botany and anatomy, and it forms the basis of the English Language and Roman numerals are everywhere if you only look.

David Attenborough and Jane Goodall Art Project

Such a great drawing project! I learnt this technique in art colleges, yonks ago, and due to Niamh's lack of belief in her drawing skills I thought this would be ideal. (You print the picture you want to draw, section it and then mirror the sectioning on your paper/canvas).  Using environmentalist hero/shero - Sir David Attenborough and Dr Jane Goodall, who Niamh already knows a lot about, I hoped this would give Niamh the chance to see that drawing is a learning process, rather than a simple talent.  Being truly honest, she hasn't enjoyed this and has unfortunately decided that she doesn't enjoy the process. I'll keep going with it because I think if I can just get her to finish it, she may be surprised at the end result.

Geography - Wild food mapping

Niamh loved maps so using wild food I asked her to explore the local park and map the area using wild food. Foraging with kids is an excellent book that we found at the library and offers simple recipes.  We knew where wild garlic and blackberries grew in Spring and Autumn and we'd previously made crumbles and pesto with the products we'd found.  Over the course of two days, we discovered: Blackberries Slow berries Elderberries Watercress Watering Apple's Sunflower heads (roasted - these are incredible!)
